An amazing tabla player and zouk dancer

Sanjai - A pharmacist by trade and an experienced and stylish dancer of zouk lambada.

Other hobbies include yoga and playing the tabla which is an Indian percussion instrument. He says his yoga practice compliments the dance in terms of improved flexibility and fluidity of movement. Also, he suggests that playing a percussion instrument goes hand in hand with dancing in the sense that both skills require the ability to creatively improvise on the spot and to maintain good timing.

He is one of the "Old school" guys who started Lambada in 2001 and has seen the development of the dance into the newer styles of zouk and lambazouk. His first teachers were the legends of zouk lambada dancing, Patricia Cruz, Braz Dos Santos and Berg Dias. His dancing style emphasises attitude with smoothness of movement. His zouk musical preferences are Afro-zouk, RnB and Hip hop. After a serious back injury and subsequent operation in 2007 he was unable to dance but was determined to come back.... "Spending a year in recovery with no dancing was very frustrating" he says but he came back to the scene stronger and won a lambazouk dance competition in 2010!!!....

"It was quite a proud moment after what I went through!!" he spoke with great enthusiasm. He is of Indo-Caribbean heritage and started dancing lambada because the music was more familiar to what he was used to growing up which was soca and calypso...He tried salsa initially but couldn’t get into the music...Since 2001 the Lambazouk scene has changed dramatically..... "What we dance to now is very different to the music I was learning to in 2001"He believes that dancing and playing percussion are great stress relievers and have revitalising properties..."dancing and drumming are clearly linked and I am currently trying to explore the relationship between the two" He continued onto saying " My motto on the dance scene is to keep learning, focus on form and style and to be humble at all times, I suppose that’s a good policy in life as well"He currently works part time and is keen on following zouk rhythms whilst playing tabla and he has posted some of his ideas on Facebook which receive great feedbacks each time!
